Rafael Leitão (São Luís, Brazil, 1979) is a leading figure in Brazilian chess. He learned to play at age six and quickly stood out internationally, winning the Under-12 World Championship in 1991 and the Under-18 World Championship in 1996.
In 1998, at just 18 years old, he earned the Grandmaster title, becoming the youngest Brazilian at the time to reach that milestone. Throughout his career, he has been crowned Brazilian Absolute Champion seven times, represented Brazil in nine Chess Olympiads, and also achieved the Grandmaster title in correspondence chess.
In addition to his extensive competitive career, Leitão is an accomplished coach, author, and chess educator, combining elite competitive experience with a strong passion for teaching.
