Rafael Leitão (São Luís, Brazil, 1979) is one of the leading figures in Brazilian chess. He learned to play at age six and quickly stood out internationally, winning the Under-12 World Championship in 1991 and the Under-18 World Championship in 1996. In 1998, at just 18 years old, he earned the International Grandmaster title, becoming the youngest Brazilian at the time to achieve that distinction. Throughout his career he has been crowned Brazilian Champion seven times, represented Brazil in nine Chess Olympiads, and also achieved the Grandmaster title in correspondence chess. In addition to his extensive competitive career, Leitão does outstanding work as a coach, author, and chess promoter, combining high-level competitive experience with a strong teaching vocation.
