GM Andrés Rodríguez Vila is the first and only Grandmaster in the history of Uruguayan chess. He started playing at age 10, played his first World Youth Championship at 12, and became his country's first International Master at 18. Recognized as one of the most creative players in South America, he qualified for the 2009 World Cup and represented Uruguay in multiple Olympiads. Today he combines high-level competition with outstanding work as a coach.

He learned to play at age six and quickly stood out internationally, winning the Under-12 World Championship in 1991 and the Under-18 World Championship in 1996. In 1998, at just 18 years old, he earned the Grandmaster title, becoming the youngest Brazilian at the time to reach that milestone. Throughout his career, he has been crowned Brazilian Absolute Champion seven times, represented Brazil in nine Chess Olympiads, and also achieved the Grandmaster title in correspondence chess. In addition to his extensive competitive career, Leitão is an accomplished coach, author, and chess educator, combining elite competitive experience with a strong passion for teaching.
